Other hints Don't have drones behavior set to aggressive - set to passive so they only attack when you have aggro and tell them to attack
Be very aware of elite frigates, they seem particularly prone to attacking drones - kill them first

Clearing the cached user names worked for me (login boxes appearing the moment the cache was cleared), prior attempts to reset launcher settings did not. Though did have to restart launcher to get past a greyed out "Play" button.
